The Greek coast guard service discovered and seized over one ton of heroin. It found the drug during a large-scale operation to break up a drug trafficking network operating in different regions of Attica, which was carried out in cooperation with the Greek police and the US Drug Enforcement Administration DEA.

The operation began late last night and involved members of the coast guard service. They found and seized a total of 1,133.420 kilograms of heroin, and arrested members of the network that was involved in the trafficking of large quantities of drugs.

During the preliminary investigation, the authorities established that large quantities of heroin had been transported to a warehouse near the Koropi suburb in Athens where the drug had been packed in bags for marble dust and then subsequently transported by trucks both to other regions in Greece and to other European countries.

During the inspection of the warehouse and of houses located in the northern Athens suburbs, the authorities apprehended 11 people, including 5 foreigners and 6 Greeks, one of whom is an only 15-year-old minor.

The heroin found was wrapped in 443 plastic bags and in addition to it, the authorities also found cocaine weighing 5.1 grams.

During the operation, the authorities also seized six luxury cars, by which the drugs were transported, a gun and a magazine for nine cartridges, as well as a cash amount of 6,235 euro and other smaller items.

The express proceedings against the apprehended persons and the preliminary investigation of the case are conducted by the central administration of the coast guard service in Piraeus. The detainees will appear for questioning before the district prosecutor of the seaside town and the investigation is continuing.

According to unconfirmed information, the case involves a Greek ship owner, his ex-wife and 15-year-old son. The person under arrest stated that he owned four tankers in Dubai.

The same evidence suggests that having discovered around 500 kilograms of heroin in the warehouse in Koropi, the authorities questioned the first detainees in the case, who took them to the ship owner’s house in the expensive Filothei suburb where they found another 500 kilograms of the same drug.

According to unofficial data, the five foreigners are Turkish citizens.
