A migrant smuggler had been killed near the island of Kos in the early morning by members of the Greek coast guard. The victim was a 29-year-old Turkish citizen. He had been driving a speedboat, which was supposedly transporting illegal immigrants to Psalidi beach of Kos.
Shortly before the start of the pursuit, the smuggler had left seven immigrants on the beach. A patrol boat of the Greek coast guard had spotted the smuggler’s boat and urged him, both on the radio and through sound signals, to stop for a check.
According to the Greek news agency AMNA, he did not obey, sped up the boat and then rammed the patrol boat at least four times. Its crew fired a few warning shots at the engine of the boat in order to disable it but some of the bullets hit the smuggler.
After the incident, the body of the trafficker was transported to the hospital in Kos where a forensic doctor carried out an autopsy.
The port authorities in Kos have started an administrative investigation and the case has been referred to the prosecutor of the Naval Court of Piraeus.
