The Greek farmers stayed imperturbable after the threats of the Bulgarian Prime Minister Boiko Borisov that if they don’t terminate the blockages of the borders until today, Wednesday, 20.01.2010 he will sue them. “We are solid in our requests. We want our money which are our due. Last year we sat 22 days at the blockages. We left after we saw the numbers in our bank accounts. We will stay at Promahonas as long as we have to”, was the joint response of the farmers from Serres who have seized the largest frontier post between Bulgaria and Greece.
In a mild tone, but just as firm was the answer of the Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou to the statements of his Bulgarian colleague. “We are not a country of force. Our strength is in the dialogue”, said socialist Prime Minister. As GRReporter already wrote, Boiko Borisov compared the situation at the Bulgarian – Greek border with the one in the Somali gulf and said that he is over with the diplomacy and the good neighbor relations at a moment when the Bulgarian economy has to pay for the problems in Greece.
Yesterday Bulgaria officially approached the European commission in relation to the blockages of the frontier post and asked for compensation in the amount of 10 million euro. Bulgarian complaint was officially supported by the European civil party. The prosecutor of Greek’s Supreme Court Ioannis Tendes issued an order to all prosecutors in the country to compose correspondence for the actions of the demonstrating farmers and if necessary to start court actions against them. The violation of the right to travel and the prevention of public transportation is a crime and is criminal offence according to Greek laws.
The tension at the farmers’ blockages is increasing and the participation becomes more and more mass. Today the frontier posts with Bulgaria at Promahonas and Eksiohi will stay closed as well as those with Macedonia at Dojran and Evzoni and the customs at Krystallopigi. Since today the Thessaloniki farmers are also joining the protests. They will close the road junction at Malkara. Four more roads will be closed since today – at the Tembi passage, around Tarnovo, at Platikambo and in Larissa. Also from today the farmers from Peloponnesus will also take part and will close the Korinth – Tripoli highway.
