The Greek To Vima newspaper published photos from the video cameras of Nigrita prison, revealing horrific details of the incident in which Albanian recidivist Ilia Kareli, aged 42, was beaten to death by warders.
The seven shocking photos show how warders, who were "very hostile" as stated by witnesses,
surrounded the 42-year-old Albanian who had killed warder George Tsironis a few days earlier.
The director of Nigrita prison can be seen among them as well. At 3:45 am on 27 March, the warders pushed Kareli to the reception room and, after 2 hours and 45 minutes, took him out from there, almost naked and covered in wounds, and dragged him to his cell, where he died a little later.
The videos recorded by the cameras show that the 42-year-old recidivist was in good condition upon arrival in Nigrita and had only a hematoma on his left eye. The following frames show him unable to stand on his feet, being dragged to his cell, where he died.
Precisely these frames have prompted the staff of the Internal Investigations Department of the Greek police to initiate an investigation against the perpetrators of the beating in Nigrita prison.
It should be noted that the defendants in connection with the beating on Kareli are 15 prison officers, eight of whom have already given statements in their defence and six are detained in custody. It is expected that the remaining seven, including the director of the prison, will be defended in the coming hours.
