The Greek police have reported a sharp decline in crime in 2013 in the statistics published on Friday. Compared to 2012, robberies decreased by 17.9%, theft and burglary - by15.2%, and homicide - by 11.9% throughout Greece.
In 2013, there were 141 cases of murder nationwide compared to 165 in 2012 (24 less). 177 assassination attempts were made versus 185 in 2012 (8 less), and the decrease was 4.3%. There were 284 cases of murder or attempted murder, i.e. 89.3%.
In 2013, 4,919 robberies were committed in Greece versus 5,002 in 2012. The reduction rate of bank robberies was 26.7%, and of home robberies - 20%. Murders decreased by 11.9% - from 165 in 2012 to 141 in 2013. Thefts and burglaries also marked a decline. In 2013, 74,538 cases were registered, or 13,374 less compared to 2012. Across Greece, the number of registered robbed homes decreased by 2,596 and there were 973 fewer cases of purse thefts. Cases of treasure-hunting decreased by 29.8% in 2013, while rape cases and fraud - by 16.7% and 9.7%, respectively.
In 2013, 74,538 thefts were committed in the country, or 13,374 fewer than 2012 when they were 87,912. Furthermore, 4,616 burglary attempts were registered compared to 5,288 in 2012, i.e. 672 less.
The number of cases of death in road accidents in 2013 compared to 2012 also decreased by 115.
As announced, demonstrations, rallies and marches and 5,840 sporting events were carried out in 2013.
Regarding the fight against illegal immigration, 43,002 foreign nationals in total were detained in 2013 compared to 76,878 in 2012, i.e. the reduction is more than 44%. The reduction of arrests near the land border between Greece and Turkey was 96.4%. In 2013, "only" 1,109 immigrants were detained compared to 30,433 in 2012 - i.e. before the completion of the barrier and before the commencement of "Operation Shield".
As for illegal trade, 120,016 cases of verification of compliance with relevant provisions were carried out in 2013 and 3,844 violations were confirmed versus 698 in 2012. 33 warehouses with illegal goods were discovered, and nearly 1.5 million garments, sunglasses, pirated CDs and DVDs, leather goods and more were seized.
Commenting on the statistics, Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias said that the Greek police do a marvellous job in terms of the protection of the life, property and dignity of citizens. Under the present conditions, this is a great achievement, he added.
It is noted that the first special real-time software of the Greek police has been displaying electronically crimes and incidents of police interest since the beginning of 2010. In this new way, all cases are registered in every police department in the country on a daily basis analytically and comprehensively via the Police On Line system.
