The Greek police have revealed the plan for a major terrorist attack planned for October 4. This happened after the arrest of a young man in a garage in the Athens district of Vyronas, in whom a notebook including the names of famous businessmen, mention of the New Democracy party, as well as specific dates was found.

More precisely, according to a statement by the police, the investigation led to the capture of a man on whom data were found, about the activity of shipping magnate Evangelos Marinakis, President of the Union of Enterprises Theodoros Fesas and his wife Maria Tselendi. Phone numbers of the Union of Greek Ship-owners chaired by Theodore Veniamis and newspaper clippings related to specific events have also been found.

In addition, companies such as Capital, Siemens and Info Quest have been mentioned in the notes.

The police chief said that based on observations and data found on the detainee, the terrorists had prepared the attack for 4 October.

On his part, the Minister of Public Order Vassilios Kikilias stressed that "as you know, this date is the anniversary of the establishment of New Democracy, in connection with which a particular event has been envisaged. As you can see, the terrorists have planned specific attacks, their ultimate objective being to humiliate the state institutions and to undermine the financial and the social balance in the country.

Regarding the development of the case, the Chief of Greek Police stated the following: "In the last 10 days of September, within the investigation of antiterrorists to find and arrest Paula Roupa and other members of the group of the terrorist Nikos Maziotis, a garage has been discovered in the district of Vyronas rented by Maziotis in June 2013. A fingerprint of Nikos Maziotis has been detected on the lease agreement; and it was recognized by the owner of the garage. The garage had been rented with a fake ID card containing details of an existing person from the country, who however has not lost his ID documents, so we think that the fake document has been prepared only by misappropriation of the data.

A roof rack of a car and metal supports have been found in the garage, which belonged to the stolen Nissan Sunny, used in the powerful blast at the Bank of Greece on Amerikis street in Athens.

The keys of that car have also been found. The garage, which has been monitored by the police during all these days, was approached yesterday evening by a young man of about 30-32 years, who was detained after he showed fierce resistance".

As reported by the chief of police, the detainee refuses to say anything, so he has not yet been identified. Furthermore, from the fingerprints taken it became clear that he is not an old acquaintance of the authorities. We are currently awaiting the approval of the prosecutor to continue identifying the young man based on biometric data.

Apart from the notes, the backpack of the detainee contained clothes, hats and other items. In the notes, the dates 1, 2, 3 and 4 October are mentioned, October 3 being specified not very clearly as a "dress rehearsal", and October 4 as the day of the attack under the code names "taper", "bicycle", "sausage. "

A clipping from the Newspaper of Editors has also been found containing an article entitled:  “While fools pay, the shipping magnates set sail”, and subtitled: “24 ships in Piraeus, none of them with the Greek flag".

However, what is of interest for the management of the police is a chart with the route from Amfitheas Avenue to the rented garage in Vyronas, which is estimated to last 16 minutes. Near the place on Amfitheas Avenue is the headquarters of New Democracy, a fact that raises suspicions that perhaps this was the target of the attack.

As reported by the chief of police, it becomes clear from the investigation by the antiterrorists that the detainee and his unknown accomplices had wanted to buy bottles of acetylene and oxygen: when these two elements are put together an extremely powerful explosive mixture is obtained that could cause real carnage.

However both, the police chief and the Minister of Public Order refused to give more information on the case, saying that the investigation was currently underway.

Minister Kikilias stressed that the investigation was being carried out in complete secrecy, and its progress is regularly reported to Prime Minister Antonis Samaras. He also added that "the fight against terrorism is a long and painful battle directly related to the sense of freedom and security of citizens, the quality of democracy, the smooth development in an economic and social aspect, and the international image of the country".

Finally Vassilios Kikilias stated: "Efforts made towards the final exit from the economic crisis involve to a large extent the establishment of a climate of security, both domestically and internationally. Providing such a climate is a national obligation and a top priority of the government; we will, therefore, double our efforts to achieve the best result possible".
