During his televised address to the Greek nation Alexis Tsipras said he resigns as he has completed the first cycle following the negotiations with creditors and the allocation of the first tranche of the new bailout to Greece. He specified the achievements of the government during the negotiations with creditors, indicating what Greece has won and lost. The Prime Minister, however, said the people must now decide whether the government has been successful or not through the most democratic procedure, namely the elections that will probably take place on 20 September.

Alexis Tsipras said that the people must clearly state who they want to continue the negotiations with creditors on debt. According to him, his moral duty is to allow Greek people to assess what has done so far, both the successes and shortcomings. He asked for the vote of people, so that "we be more experienced and better prepared to govern," as he stated.

According to Tsipras, Europe is no longer the same after these six months of negotiations, because it is now clear that the policy of austerity does not have the expected results and the resistance of Greeks has become an example for other European nations.

Having completed his address the Prime Minister went to the presidential residence to submit his resignation and that of the government to President Prokopis Pavlopoulous. During the meeting with the President Alexis Tsipras said that the completion of the negotiations cycle with creditors and the allocation of the first tranche of the new bailout have restored economic stability in Greece and now it remains to recover political stability through elections.
