A Greek tanker with 24 crew members has been missing since 4 June, as reported by Fairdeal Group SA company that owns it. The communication with the ship was interrupted on Thursday when it was sailing in the open sea near the coast of Ghana. MT Fair Artemis oil tanker was registered in Liberia and sailed under its flag. Its captain and first engineer are Greeks, 4 crew members are from Sri Lanka, 1 is from Ghana, and the remaining 17 are Filipinos.
On Sunday, the military forces of Ghana reported that the tanker could be near the coast of Togo. "The tanker is not within our territorial waters. It has probably sailed to Togo," military spokesman of Ghana Eric Angra-Kouassi told Agence France Presse, adding that the Navy of Ghana was awaiting confirmation from the authorities in Togo.
A representative of Fairdeal Group SA, who is in constant contact with the operations centre of the Greek Ministry of Shipping, said the last contact with the captain was established at around 6:00 pm on Wednesday, 4 June. The company has requested assistance from the local authorities in the search for the tanker.
Reuters reports that the tanker may have been hijacked by pirates, referring to government sources from Ghana. So far, however, the company that owns it has not confirmed this information.
