The opposition SYRIZA party ranks as first political force as shown by the preference of the Greek voters in the two recent polls conducted in Greece.
According to the results of the poll carried out by Thessaloniki University of Macedonia, SYRIZA is holding the lead against the ruling New Democracy party with 7.5%. At the same time, the newly established party of journalist Stavros Theodorakis To Potami has displaced the extreme right Golden Dawn from the third position. In particular, the ranking of the parties according to the support of the electorate is as follows:
SYRIZA - 27.5%, New Democracy - 20%, To Potami - 7.5%, Golden Dawn - 6.5%, the Greek Communist Party - 5.5%, PASOK - 4%, Independent Greeks - 2.5%, LAOS - 1.5% and the Democratic Left - 0.5%.
According to the poll of Kappa Research for newspaper "To Vima", the difference in favour of SYRIZA is even higher, namely 3.9%. The poll results are as follows:
SYRIZA - 27.4%, New Democracy - 23.5%, Golden Dawn - 6.4%, PASOK - 5.8%, To Potami - 5.6%, the Greek Communist Party - 5.3%, Independent Greeks - 3.8%, LAOS - 1.6% and Democratic Left - 1.1%.
Despite the dominance of the left, their leader Alexis Tsipras is still losing to Antonis Samaras in terms of who is more suitable for Prime Minister as the current Prime Minister won 42.5% of the voter preferences compared to 36.1% for the opposition leader.
50.8%, or one in two Greeks, want the new President to be elected by this Parliament. 42.3% of the Greeks, however, want early elections and the new members of Parliament to elect the President.
The Greeks are divided on the need for early elections. 52.4% of them believe that they would have a negative impact on the economy and society in Greece. According to 46.5% of respondents, Greece has not yet escaped the risk of exiting the euro zone, whereas 45.2% are of the opinion that such a possibility does not exist.
According to 40.3% of respondents, a better government should involve New Democracy as the main coalition partner and 39.5% believe it should involve SYRIZA.
Although both parties rely on the populist slogan "let’s leave the memorandum," the majority of the Greeks doubt their ability to do so. Especially in the case of SYRIZA, 69% of respondents indicate that it is not able to break the implementation of the bailout programmes to Greece.
