Over 30,000 Athenians went yesterday to the central Syntagma Square to show with their presence that Greece's place is in Europe and the euro zone. Businessmen, journalists, financiers, scholars, political scientists, doctors, students, young and old, men and women in a good mood and smiling said a powerful "We Stay in Europe." Among those present, we met Loukas Tsoukalis, the president of the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy ELIAMEP.
- Why are you here, at the demonstration "We Stay in Europe"?
- Because I want to stress that Greece must stay in the euro zone and in Europe. This is its place. Some doubt it and we need to emphasize it.
- Could we say that a new reformist bloc is being born in Greece having in mind this demonstration?
- We could say that the vast majority of Greeks want Greece to stay in the euro zone and in Europe. However, most of them never go to demonstrations. Now the urban middle class is out to demonstrate too.
- Staying in the euro zone requires reforms. Do Greeks realize this?
- Perhaps not all understand what this means and this is not accidental. If you look at the polls, you will see that most people state they want to stay in the euro zone, even if the price for this is significant. I.e. they are aware of what it means.
