The ruling New Democracy and the radical left SYRIZA are fighting alongside one another for political supremacy among citizens as shown by the February results of the political barometer.

The blue retreat with a slight difference in the "Who would you vote for if there were elections now?" category but lead by a wide margin in the other category, namely "Who do you think will win the elections?"

At the same time, people still prefer the government of the triple coalition. However, the difference between the coalition government and a potential leftist government decreased last month.

In particular, according to a poll conducted by the Public issue agency, the political influence of SYRIZA is 29% against 28.5% of New Democracy.

Golden Dawn is still in third place in the preferences of respondents with 11.5%. The Independent Greeks party also retains its position and it is in fourth place with 8%.

The two government partners of New Democracy - PASOK and the Democratic Left, report losses of 1% compared to last month. PASOK is in fifth place with 7% followed by the Democratic Left with 6%. The Communist Party ranks last and the percentage of its political influence is 5.5.

On the other hand, 48% of respondents are convinced that New Democracy would be the winner if elections were held today. The corresponding rate of the radical left is 38%. This result completely changes the picture of a month ago, when the left were leading with 44% against 39% for the blue government.

The radical left is at the top of the best opposition ranking with 31% followed by "neither party" with a score of 26%, Independent Greeks with 15%, Golden Dawn and the Communist Party with 12%.

In the "most suitable for prime minister" category the lead is held by New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras who is supported by 46% of respondents whereas the support for Alexis Tsipras is 25%. 26% of respondents in the poll state that neither of the two leaders is suitable for prime minister.

On the other hand, the difference between the possible alternatives for the government of the country has decreased. The triple coalition continues to lead with 37% (compared to 40% in January) and 23% support a government of SYRIZA (against 19% last month). The second place in this ranking continues to be occupied by the "neither of the two governments" choice supported by 36% of respondents.

Regardless of their political views, 72% of respondents believe that Greece is on the wrong track against 21% who support the policies pursued. 63% of respondents want profound changes in society whereas 23% do not hesitate to declare that a radical change is necessary which will come after a revolution.

The supporters of the Communist Party are of the most revolutionary attitude – 61% followed by  Golden Dawn with 40% and Independent Greece with 37%. The voters of the parties involved in the government are the most distant from that perspective: 6% of PASOK supporters, 10% of New Democracy and 13% of the Democratic Left.

38% of respondents believe that the economic situation in Greece will improve over the next five years, while 35% state that the crisis will deepen.

Perhaps under the influence of the government's decision to forcibly return to work the public transport and dock workers, 80% of Greeks expect a rise in tensions in the labour market and only 13% think the opposite. The change in disposition becomes immediately evident when comparing the data with the results of the political barometer of last month: 62% against 29%.

At the same time, the increase in the popularity of the parties is impressive. The largest is the percentage of PASOK, which records an increase of 7%. Although it is still in the front line, there is no change in the position of the Democratic Left compared to January and according to experts, this is due to its participation in the government.

The popularity of its leader Fotis Kouvelis marks a decline although he is still at the top of the ranking. Second is Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, whose popularity has increased by 2% followed by Alexis Tsipras.

Fourth is Panos Kamenos with 33% followed by Aleka Papariga with 31%, whose popularity has increased by 6% probably because of the violent protests of the PAME communist trade union.

The leader of PASOK Evangelos Venizelos is in sixth place with 25% whereas the leader of Golden Dawn Nikos Mihaloliakos is at the bottom of the ranking with 18%.

The vast majority or 96% of respondents define the tax system as unfair. 60% believe that the people concealing income are "too many" and 31% think they are "many".

The poll was conducted between 1 and 5 February though phone calls across Greece.
