The Greek police had found a hand grenade in a ditch near Agios Nikolaos station of the electric train in Athens. The finding alerted the authorities, which issued an order to stop the movement on the line in the late afternoon on Tuesday.
An order to evacuate the passengers from the central station of Kifissia - Piraeus line was immediately issued as well but movement was resumed a little later.
According to initial reports, the grenade is quite old and dates back to the time of World War II. It was found at a distance of about 100 metres from the station.
So far, it is not clear who had placed the grenade. It could have been a passerby as the rails at the specific location are on the ground or a passenger in one of the carriages. The police are not even aware of the intention of the person who placed the ammunition near the station of the electric train.
The anti-terrorism service has been informed about the case but so far the police department of Attica region has been carrying out the investigation.
Experts from the explosive mechanisms disposal department had arrived at the scene immediately. The grenade was submitted to military experts in this field late in the evening.
