The Head of Greek police Vasilios Tziatouras resigned after an order by minister of defense Mihalis Hrisohoidis. The reason is the actions of the police on Wednesday night, when policemen arrested higher employees of the leftist coalition SIRIZA. Today, minister Hrisohoidis publicly apologized for the actions of the policemen.

The tension started after an attack at patrolling policemen by a group of youngsters in Exarhia neighborhood. A little bit later the policemen busted into a building where a book presentation was taking place and SIRIZA representatives were present. Based on policemen’s claims they entered the building because they had information that a couple of their attackers from earlier, were inside. Two politicians were arrested – Dimitris Papahristos and Stelios Eliniadis. The actions of the police were not blamed only by the SIRIZA leader but also from the Communist party, LAOS and the Party of the Ecologists.

Vasilios Tziatouras has been the head of the Greek police ever since March 2, 2007. During the following day, an announcement is expected with the name of the new head of police.
