An increase in the train tickets price is expected as of next year. However, the prices will stay the same for the rest of the current year. The increase will affect mainly the rout Athens-Thessaloniki, as passengers will have to pay 75% more than if the take the bus.
The last time train tickets saw an increase was during last August but then an increase was planned to take place every eight months, with 33% for the regular trains, 13% for the Intercity and &% for the Intercity express.
The Railways Organization deficit has reached €9b, accompanied by a wages-expense boom. During 2004 the expense for the salaries of 9 200 employees summed up to €240m annually, and this year, despite the decrease in employees number, the wages jumped to €440m.
Hellenic Railways problems were discussed yesterday at a meeting between the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Dimitris Repas, his deputy Nikos Sifunakis and the five rail companies managers, lasting more than three hours.
The basic guidelines in Hellenic Railways new development plan refer to the surplus of employees that need to be repositioned with the help of the Ministry of Labor. The train routs also need reconsideration, as well as the management of the rail company.
