Hooligans attacked and hit New Democracy MP Vassilis Oikonomou in the Athens district of Exarcheia. It all started around 10:00 pm last night when the politician was at the "Sugar and Salt" bistro on Valtetsiou Street, alone, without guards. A dozen men whose faces were hidden by hoods and motorcycle helmets entered the restaurant and asked, "Are you Vassilis Oikonomou, who was a member of PASOK and Democratic Left and now of New Democracy?" When he confirmed, the men began to violently beat him and break what they saw before their eyes. "We will kill you if you step back in Exarcheia," they shouted.
Immediately after the accident, the deputy was taken to a Red Cross hospital where he was given first aid. An interesting detail is that the "Sugar and Salt" bistro is located opposite another restaurant where a few months ago Minister of Finance at the time Yanis Varoufakis was attacked in a similar way.
"We cannot live in this jungle, to stay away from some neighbourhoods in the 21st century," said Vassilis Oikonomou upon leaving the hospital. Parliament chairman Nikos Voutsis of SYRIZA condemned the accident and New Democracy interim chairman Yiannis Plakiotakis urged the police to act quickly and apprehend the hooligans. "I urge the government to take measures to isolate and marginalize the anarchists," added Yiannis Plakiotakis.
