For the same supplies of the same company in London, the price is €100, while in Greece prices are running between €300 and €3000, depending on the amount of speculation on the part of doctors or hospital providers, revealed Vima newspaper. The results of the study, conducted by the Ministry of Health and the prosecutor’s office, are really amazing!

X-ray in the Athenian hospital Evangelizmos and in any hospital in Alexandroupoli or Patras is calculated to the health insurance fund according to a different price list. Hospital providers and supplies of medical instruments in combination with the doctors and the hospital staff have arranged a feast at the expense of the insurance funds, which has increased the cost of hospitals in the last five years from €1.5 billion to €3 billion.

It turns out that everyone benefits from all! From alcohol, gauzes, sponges, defibrillators, catheters, orthopaedic materials, everyone makes profit, which reached up to 1,000% in some public hospitals, compared with the prices of the same materials in other European countries and Cyprus.

When auditors from International Monetary Fund and the EU visited the Ministry of Health for the first time, remained shocked by the situation and said that immediately €500 million of costs must be cut. Minister Mariliza Xenoyanakopoulou reduced budget for 2010 from €3 billion to €2.5 billion while ordered a study, which ended about a month ago.

Furthermore, government staff revealed that it is possible the number of dead people, who have not yet been removed from health-insurance funds, to exceed 150 000. So far there are detected cases where many prescriptions were issued in the name of people who are no longer among the living.

Four Greek and foreign companies, which are the biggest suppliers for hospital supplies and orthopaedic implants, operate on a profit of 773 percent, also reported Ethnos newspaper, which quotes information from the review made by the Directorate General for Trade! The revision was made following a complaint by the Administrative Council of Thessaloniki Hospital Papageorgiou and the names of the companies-suppliers were revealed - IAMEKS AD, Arthrosis AD, Johnson & Johnson Ηellas ΑΕΒΕ and Biomed Ltd., which have overpriced their supplies at the expense of the insurance funds.
