A powerful explosion shook the Athens district of Halandri around two o’clock last night, when a bomb exploded in the courtyard of a two-storey house at 11 Koudourioton Street and  was also felt in the adjacent neighbourhoods of Maroussi, Psychiko and Ambelokipi. There are two separate flats in the house and prosecutor Paraskevi Kalaitzi occupies one of them. At the time of the explosion, she was at home but the police have not reported any casualties or wounded persons.
The area around the house is cut off by police, fire engines and ambulances are at the scene. The windows of neighbouring houses have been broken and the cars parked in the surrounding area have been damaged.
Paraskevi Kalaitzi represented the prosecution in the case of the kidnapping of shipping magnate Pericles Panagopoulos. He was kidnapped in January 2009 and after spending ten days with his kidnappers, he was released against a ransom of 30 million euro. Later, his kidnappers were captured and brought to justice, but the money had disappeared.
The preliminary investigation has been undertaken by the department combating extortion at the security office in Athens.
