Hundreds of schools in various parts of Greece closed due to snow

Heavy snow is falling across much of Greece and bad weather and low temperatures will persist tomorrow, Thursday.

It is very cold in northern Greece, with temperatures having been below zero in all areas of Central and Western Macedonia since early morning.

There has been a heavy snowfall in the whole region of Fthiotida since early morning and the snow cover is over 10 cm in the city of Larissa. In the northern and western areas of the region and in the area of ​Domokos and Karpenissi in particular, the snow cover is 20 cm. By decision of the prefecture of Continental Greece, all schools in the region of Fthiotida remained closed, except for those in the area of ​​the town of Atalanta. Despite the heavy snowfall, no problems on the road network have been reported, as dozens of snowploughs are working hard and keeping the roads open. Such are the conditions on the road network between Agios Konstantinos and Lamia.

Schools in the districts of Trikala and Karditsa and even in the regional cities were closed today, again because of heavy snowfall. In the district of Trikala 40 snowploughs have been involved in cleaning roads since 02:00 am and according to the responsible staff on duty, the snow cleaning operations in the district of Karditsa involve 48 machines. Traffic is smooth on the national road network too.

Larissa and the entire region are dressed in white as it has been snowing since early morning. By decision of Larissa municipality, all schools are closed in both the city of Larissa and the other municipalities of the region. No serious traffic problems have been reported so far and it is expected that the bad weather will be less intense in the afternoon.

Heavy snow has been falling in Mount Pelion since morning, the snow cover reaching 70 cm in places and vehicles must use tyre chains to drive from Portaria and up.

It snowed in the city of Volos in the morning and all city neighbourhoods are now white. Heavy snow has been falling in the area of ​​Almiros since the morning, as well as in Keramides, Kerassia and Elefterohori.

On the Sporades Islands, where the snowfall was particularly intense on Monday, and mainly on the islands of Skopelos and Alonissos, it snowed today too but stopped at times.

Schools in Kalavrita municipality remained closed today due to bad weather conditions in the area and problems are occurring in the mountainous area Aetolia-Acarnania.

Schools are closed in the municipality of Tripoli and in Gortinia. By decision of the mayor of North Kinouria, only schools in Kastri and Agios Petros are closed.
