A hurricane has struck Greece

Hurricanes, heavy rains and storms, as well as abundant snow in Greece’s highland areas have pinned down the country. The bad weather is expected to continue today and cause further worries. The ministry of shipping has banned the departure of ships from all ports.

Ferry lines have ceased functioning in the northeast Aegean, the Cycladic Islands, Crete and the Dodecanese. The routes between Volos and Sporades Islands, to Thassos, Samothrace, Corfu, Zakynthos and Kefalonia are closed. The Rio-Andirio bridge is closed, too.

An emergency situation in Arta

Yesterday evening the coordination district council decided to declare a state of emergency in the municipalities of Arta and Nikolaos Skoufa due to bad weather.

Pournari reservoir water level has risen by 37 cm. It was decided to re-evaluate the situation on Sunday and empty the reservoir if necessary.

Immediate repairs of the pillars of the Koboti river bridge have been initiated to restore traffic flow.

The fields of Peranthi have been badly afflicted, with farmers standing to lose tons of oranges and tangerines. Huge areas are flooded; houses, shops and farms have suffered damage. Many villages are without water, as supply networks have been broken.

River Acheron is overflowing, farmlands have been flooded in the Fanari valley.

Floods and traffic problems on Tripoli roads

Thousands of acres under crops in Mandinia have been floodedwith  rainwater during the last two days.

Because of the vast swells in the region of Pelagos, the traffic police and civil defence have stopped traffic and closed the roads Pelagos-Ktiniatrio and Pelagos - Parori.

Landslides and floods in Achaia

Heavy rains in the area demanded intervention by the authorities. As deputy regional governor Grigoris Alexopoulos stated, Haradros riverbed had to be relocated away from houses in the coastal region of Kastelokampo to avert flooding.

Alexopoulos told the Athens News Agency that the authorities were able to keep landslides in Plaka under control, hence it is not necessary to evacuate people.

There are problems in riverside areas in Egialia and in western Achaia, but teams formed by the district administration and municipalities are working hard to ward off harm on residential areas.

Precipitation has swollen the Evinos river in the municipality of Nafpaktos in Aetolia-Acarnania. Teams are reinforcing the dikes along the river.

Roads caving in Laconia

Continuous showers have created hollows in the road near the second kilometre between Potamia and Liandina. Traffic has been shunted to the Ksirokampio- Daphne-Liandina-Vasiliki road.

An inspection of landslides in Plaka, Kalavryta

A team of scientists from the Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources has arrived this morning in the village of Plaka, the municipality of Kalavryta in Achaia, to inspect the landslides in the region and propose measures to protect the locals.

Problems in Samos

Bad weather on the island of Samos has caused mainly traffic problems. Gale force winds and heavy rains persisting since last Sunday have led to falling rocks on the peripheral road.

Rocks have blocked the national road Samos-Karlovasi near Avlakia, as well as the road going through Pagonda, Pyrgos and Mytilini. Crews formed by the local municipalities and the district administration are afoot to clean roads and warn drivers.

Ships have not been running since last Thursday. Ferries from Piraeus will only resume on Tuesday. Aegean Airlines are not flying either.
