New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras did not wait for his official meeting with Alexis Tsipras to oppose the policy, which SYRIZA is seeking to impose. He accused Tsipras of lying and said that the idea of forming a government of pro-European left is just a facade whereas his real goal is for Greece to return to the drachma.
Samaras said that the proposals of the extreme left for the development of the economic policy in Greece will take the country to a sudden collapse and exit from the euro area. In reply to Alexis Tsipras’ call that PASOK and New Democracy should send a letter to the institutional creditors in order to unbind Greece from the austerity measures, Samaras said, "I will not sign up to the destruction of Greece."
He accused the young representative of the left wing of populism and stressed that in his desire to become prime minister, Tsipras is ready to betray the country's European identity. "Now we must protect the national interest rather than the party," said the leader of the right. Samaras stressed that in recent elections, the people gave their vote not to support the financial collapse of the local economy but for its recovery. "In the end, Tsipras wants us to exit the euro area. Why doesn’t he say it straight out, like the KKE?"
