It is expected that, by the end of the day or tomorrow at the latest, former businessman and banker Laurentios Laurentiadis, director of the bankrupt Proton Bank, will be released. The judicial council took the decision at a meeting, thus satisfying the defendant’s request to be released on bail to the amount of 500,000 euro due to severe health problems.
Laurentiadis spent 19 months in Korydallos prison after being detained in custody in connection with the draining of the bank by granting loans to the amount of 701 million euro with no guarantees. The charges against him include fraud, theft and money laundering.
Because of severe health problems in recent months, Laurentiadis was in the psychiatric hospital of the prison. Despite the expiration of the 18-month legal term for staying in custody, he was not released because of an additional charge, namely instigation in the attempted murder of businessman Athenagoras Andreadakis. The attackers intended to kill him by sending a pot of flowers with a bomb in it to his house. Witnesses state that the two men had different arguments and Laurentiadis ordered the murder of Andreadakis. The unsuccessful attack took place on 15 June 2012. The hand grenade wrapped as a gift exploded in the hands of the businessman and seriously wounded him but did not kill him. Laurentiadis will be on trial in connection with this accusation as well.
In addition to the bail the judicial council has imposed on him other restrictive measures such as a ban on leaving the country and obliged him to appear once a month at the police station in the neighbourhood where he lives.
The court decision imposing the remand measure against Laurentios Laurentiadis was taken on 17 December 2012. Initially, and because of the sudden deterioration in his health, he was admitted to Evangelismos hospital for treatment and returned to Korydallos prison upon being discharged from it.
