Former Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis will have to answer questions of the parliamentary commission investigating the transactions of the Mount Athos monastery Vatopedi. Members of Parliament involved in the committee unanimously decided to call the former President of New Democracy. Before the vote, however the blue members of Parliament withdrew from the meeting.
Karamanlis was summoned to testify as a witness. In the text which the the committee asks calls him with gives him the opportunity to choose himself whether to appear personally before it or to respond in writing. Two ministers in the government of New Democracy had to resign because it appeared that they were directly benefiting from the transactions of the monastery. Ekatherina Peleki had been the notary who with her signature had authenticated the sale. Peleki was the wife of one of the closest associates of Karamanlis in the past - former Minister of Defence, Interior and culture in the various governments of Karamanlis George Voulgarakis.
Former spokesman of the government of Karamanlis Theodoros Rusopolos was also forced to resign. Once the government of Greece was taken over by George Papandreou's Socialists and in the parliament a committee was created to investigate the affairs of the monastery, appeared also the unambiguous evidences that Yiannis Angelou, head of the office of the former Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis was also involved in the Vatopedi case.
