The Greek police have been able to free kidnapped businessman Manolis Karamolengos and to detain two of his five kidnappers. They involve one Greek citizen, one citizen of Moldavia, two Albanians and another person whose nationality is not reported, but the authorities state that he is from a country of the former Soviet bloc.
As GRReporter reported, the big businessman operating in the bread industry had been kidnapped on Tuesday evening when he had been returning home, his house being located between the northern Athens suburbs of Gerakas and Pendelis. His kidnappers had taken him to the remote Kerateas neighbourhood where the businessman had managed to convince one of his kidnappers, namely the citizen of Moldova, that they had fallen into a police circle and that he would face serious charges if he did not appear at the local police station alone to surrender. The Moldovan had done so. A little later, the police had detained a second kidnapper who was travelling in a taxi. The other three had fled and the police are still searching for them.
The kidnapping took place when Manolis Karamolengos was returning home to Gerakas from his office in Koropi. A car and a stolen motorbike had blocked his way and pulled him out of his car. The kidnappers had put him in the boot of the other car and set off in an unknown direction. The police search involved also the son of the entrepreneur.
Recently Karamolengos has obtained a bond loan worth 2.3 million euro, which was the amount of the ransom wanted by the kidnappers and which was the reason for the police to seek the kidnappers among the professional colleagues of the businessman.
