27-year-old Stanislav Bakardjiev charged with the murder of his 4-year-old daughter, Ani Borisova, and the annihilation of her body, will be housed today in an isolated cell in Corfu prison. This is what the public prosecutor in Athens decided after consultations with the Ministry of Justice and investigative authorities. The prosecutor had originally proposed Trikala jail, but the man will ultimately be locked up in Corfu for security reasons: there he will have no contact with other inmates.
Yesterday, the Interior Minister, Yannis Panousis, predicted that very soon the man would be dead: he would either commit suicide or be killed by other inmates. "When you murder your mother or your child in such a cruel way, something like a moral code comes into play in prison. With or without quotes, whichever way you prefer," were the minister’s words.
Ani's mother, 25-year Dimitrina Borisova, is still in custody at the police general directorate. Yesterday, the woman was granted a 48-hour reprieve, and will testify before the prosecutor tomorrow, 7 May. She has been charged with criminal negligence, which led to the murder of her daughter, and with perjury.
Psychiatrist Maria Kalogeropoulou from the Organisation for combating Drugs reported that she had warned the authorities four times about the violence problem in Ani's family, but the prosecutor in charge of family abuse failed to intervene. She confirmed the testimony of several neighbours who said that the father had often abused the child and the mother was aware of this. According to the psychiatrist, the father was absolutely indifferent to his daughter while his wife wanted the grandparents to look after the child, allowing her to only see the child whenever she chose.
Subsequently, the Organisation for Cobatting Drugs denied having a such psychiatrist employed with them. The police have detained Maria Kalogeropoulou and indicted her of having spread false information.
