On Tuesday 5 February, the District Court in Piraeus will start to hear in the first instance the case of the attempt on Konstantina Kuneva’s life. A few days before Christmas in 2008, Kuneva was splashed with acid and was taken to hospital with serious injuries. The Bulgarian will be represented in court by the legal service of the largest Greek trade union GSEE and by her personal attorney, who will ask the judge to recognize the attempt on her life as "an employment accident". This is something that will enable the lawyers to connect the attempt on her life with her trade union activity.
Konstantina Kuneva was general secretary of the trade union of cleaning ladies. Before the attack, she was in constant conflict with the employers and required them to provide insurance for the cleaning ladies and recognize their profession as harmful to health. It was something that many of them had refused to do. After the severe damage to her health caused by an unheard of brutal attack on her, the Greek trade unions responded with a massive wave of solidarity. It did not help to reveal her attackers despite the personal assurances of the Minister of Citizen Protection of the time Michalis Chrysohoidis.
Konstantina Kuneva was hospitalized in "Evangelismos" hospital for emergency medical care, where she underwent multiple operations. Currently, her treatment continues in France. The Greek and Bulgarian governments, Greek banks and many private individuals contribute for the support of her family - her retired mother and her young son.
