Dissenters who intend to establish a new party are preparing for the latest battle in the Prime Minister's residence Maximou.
It is expected that the new formation will include those deputies of the Left Platform who voted against the memorandum whereas those who abstained will remain in SYRIZA.
According to sources, the inclusion of legendary composer Mikis Theodorakis in the new party has already been discussed and he is expected to join whereas a coordination team will represent all currents. The Left Platform led by Panagiotis Lafazanis will be the major factor and the involvement of Zoe Konstantopoulou seems certain as well. Contacts with Alekos Alavanos and Manolis Glezos are being intensively established too.
Talks with members of movements and organizations of the non-parliamentary left (Antarsya party etc.) are underway as well.
Lafazanis’ next move on the political “chessboard” is for the MPs who will join the new party to become independent first. It is expected that 25 SYRIZA MPs who support the Left Platform will submit the relevant applications.
The name of the new party is already under consideration. One of the proposals discussed was United Front against the Memorandum and the other Popular Unity. If the new party is established, it will form its own parliamentary group that will also receive an exploratory mandate to form a government.
