74% of Greeks want their country to remain in the euro zone at all costs and 45% want an agreement to be signed, even if the "red lines" of the government are violated. These are the main conclusions of a poll that Alco conducted on Wednesday and Thursday.
Almost half of the respondents in the poll, which was carried out on behalf of site Newsit, want the government to come to agreement with the creditors and 37% would not say "no" to early elections.
As for the election attitudes, the margin between SYRIZA and New Democracy has decreased from 15% to 11% compared with the previous poll by Alco. The position of To Potami party is unchanged and so is that of the Communist Party KKE, Golden Dawn is losing ground whereas the percentages of Independent Greeks and PASOK are slightly higher than their current representation in parliament.
In particular, the parties rank as follows:
SYRIZA 31.3%
New Democracy 20.4%
Golden Dawn 4.8%
To Potami 5.2%
KKE 4.5%
Independent Greeks 3.2%
PASOK 3.5%
An important conclusion from the poll is that 45% of Greeks want their government to reach an agreement with the creditors, even if it has to make serious concessions. The percentage of those who want early elections is not small either, 37%.
Citizens have a clear opinion with regard to what the government should do if its proposals were not accepted. Half of the respondents want the government to make concessions and 41% want it to defend its positions.
The majority of respondents also believe that the government is not on the right track in terms of how it is carrying out the negotiations, their percentage being 47%.
The two individuals who are rated for their position in relation to the turbulent developments of the last few months are Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and opposition leader Antonis Samaras.
Voters still have a positive attitude towards the Prime Minister whereas the opposition leader continues to collect more positive opinions than negative.
As for Minister of Finance Yanis Varoufakis, the Greeks evaluate his behaviour positively, despite the criticism, as 46% of respondents are positive towards it and 39% negative.
The poll conducted by agency Alco on behalf of Newsit on 3-4 June involved 1,000 people in Greece.
