An unknown man opened fire with his Kalashnikov in a nightclub in the Mikrolimano area of Piraeus at around 4.15 h this morning. The club, on Akti Dilaveri Street, hosted a crowd of more than 300, most of them young people or teenagers. 11 were shot, with three of them sustaining serious injuries. Witnesses say the shooter was wearing a white jacket, and unloaded at least three clips into the crowd before shouting "You will all die tonight!" and fleeing in a taxi.
A young woman, who was inside the club when the man started shooting, said on Sky TV the crowd was gripped by panic, with everybody running around trying to save their lives. Some witnesses say the shooter was fair-haired while others say he was bald.
The police said four of the victims were hospitalised at the Evangelismos emergency centre while the other seven were admitted to the Attikon Hospital. The area around the nightclub was cordoned off by the police, and a massive manhunt across the Attica region is going on at the moment.
According to iefimerida.gr , the shooter had spent some time in the club that same night accompanied by a woman. There was some tension between them before they walked out, with him returning a few hours later to start his shooting rampage. The police did not exclude the version that it was the same perpetrator who opened fire in a cafe in Omonia square where a 44-year-old man died. Local media have reported that the shooter was a foreigner with a criminal past, most likely an Albanian.
