A man set himself on fire in a street in the centre of Athens in front of stunned passers-by. According to one of the witnesses, the deceased poured highly flammable liquid all over his body and set himself on fire with a match. The witness personally called an ambulance and informed the police. The man who set himself on fire was taken to a Red Cross hospital where his death was confirmed.
The tragedy took place around 7:00 a.m. this morning on the corner of Acharnon and Aghiou Meletiou Streets in central Athens. The reasons for the suicide are not known at this time. The police suppose that the victim was a foreign immigrant.
A wallet with documents belonging to an Iranian citizen has been discovered at the site of the incident. The police are trying to determine whether these documents match the identity of the deceased.
