Maria’s alleged adopters may be released

It is expected that the court in Larissa will announce today or, at the latest, in the coming days its opinion on the request to release the two Roma from Farsala who pretended, before the police, to be little Maria’s parents.

The defenders of Christos Sali and his wife Selini Sali or Eleftheria Dimopoulou expressed confidence that the court will satisfy their clients' requests to be released from custody. The main argument of the defence is that, since the biological parents of the child have been found, there is no reason for extending their stay in custody. A week after finding the child at their house the authorities proved that her biological parents are Bulgarian citizens Sasha and Atanas Russevi from the village of Nikolaevo.

At the same time, the court has rejected the request of the couple to get custody of Maria. The defenders have requested a postponement until the release of the Roma. Here we should recall that the man is in the prison in Larissa and the woman in the female wing of the prison in the Athens suburb of Korydallos.

The request of the Roma from Farsala will be considered at the beginning of January 2014.
