Maritsa once again threatens to flood Evros

Bulgaria has notified Greece that Ivaylovgrad dam lake is overflowing and therefore, operators have begun to release controlled amounts of water.

According to the Greek media, the verbal note indicates amounts of more than 300 cubic metres per second. In the area of the village of Pythio however, the amount measured is more than 630 cubic metres per second and the water level is above the critical 4.75 metres.

At the same time, last night the level of the river at its entry into Greek territory at the mouth of the River Arda was 4.85 metres, with a readiness level of 5 metres and alert level of 5.20 metres.

In view of the situation, the Evros district administration ordered the opening of the dams in the village of Pythio. According to deputy governor Dimitris Petrovits, 3,000 acres of farmland would be flooded in a controlled manner in this way.
