Candidate for President of the European Commission of the Party of European Socialists Martin Schulz will not visit Greece within his pre-election campaign, as reported by the German Der Spiegel edition.

According to the publication, Schultz has interrupted his visit to Athens, which is scheduled for this week because he does not expect very good results from the electoral "Elia" coalition nor a significant number of seats in the new European Parliament respectively. PASOK is the major partner in the coalition that aims to unite the centre-left political space in Greece.

"When the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) presented in late March in Berlin the pre-election tour of Martin Schulz in Europe, it contained a scheduled visit to Athens in the current week. PASOK, the Greek fraternal party of the SPD, apparently fears a very bitter loss in the European elections which will not allow it to secure a significant number of seats in support of Schultz," reads Der Spiegel.

The official explanation for the interruption of the visit to Athens by spokesman for Martin Schulz Armin Mahmer is that it is due to his busy pre-election schedule.

At the end of the article, the edition however states that since the outbreak of the crisis, the visits of German politicians to Greece have become a particularly difficult task in view of the public response.
