In a peaceful atmosphere and exceptional mass participation was held the protest of the two largest trade unions in Greece, GSEE and ADEDY against reforms that the Government has introduced.Thousands of Athenians participated in today’s protests. At precisely at 11:00AM young people, students, workers, laid off employees, seniors and immigrants gathered at Pedio tou Areos Square. With slogans "No black outs of work”, "All together we can", "No compromise" they expressed their strong opposition to the government policy against cuts to pensions and salaries, against changes in the pension and tax systems and against the IMF. They chanted that the people will not pay the bill of politicians and the guilty ones for the bankruptcy of the state. Shortly after 12:00PM demonstrators were joined by the left parliamentary coalition SIRIZA and went to the parliament building where the Communist trade union PAME was protesting. The demonstration was held in a peaceful atmosphere. Exception was the attempt of a group of protesters to invade the parliament building. They were stopped by the police.
Demonstrators were chanting against the economic measures the government has undertaken. They are urging all responsible for the money of the Greek people, to go to jail. "Thieves, thieves" and "Bread, education, freedom!" shouted the protesters. While demonstrators were chanting the cars of MPs are leaving the area one by one.
"We have gathered here to send our message of resistance against the barbarous and anti-nation government policy. We will be here as long as it is necessary to protect our basic working rights and Social Security, we are here to fight against the unfair and antisocial measures that lead the country and its economy to a dramatic decline. The government is not able to take Greece out of the stalemate crisis” - said the general secretary of the GSEE union of employees in the private sector George Tsilikakis. Tsalikakis appealed to workers for solidarity in the fight against government policy. He urged the gathered people to participate in the next scheduled demonstration, which will be held on May 29.
Present at the demonstration were representatives of social movements and trade unions from Germany, Sweden, Spain, Italy, Austria and Uruguay.
In memory of the Marfin Bank victims from May 5, protesters kept a moment of silence.
