Maximum working hours for stores and public transportation during holidays

On the eve of New Year, many Greeks will celebrate outside the big cities and the traffic is expected to be quite intense. Fortunately time is on our side and in certain parts of the country temperatures will reach 23˚C. Traffic police has taken extraordinary measures to allow cars to travel safely and without congestion at the exits of the big cities.

In Athens, public transportation will run until late evening so that citizens will be able to get to their homes and public offices will be open until 3:00PM this afternoon to respond to the needs of citizens. Stores also announced their holiday shopping hours.

Initially, let us reassure you that the temperature in the country will continue to be high and in Attica it will reach 21˚C, on the islands it will be between 20˚C and 22˚C, and in Peloponnese it will reach a record high of 23˚C for the season.

For safe traffic the Traffic Police prohibit the movement of trucks over a ton and a half on highways from 04:00PM to 09:00PM and on every 20-30 kilometers there will be police patrol cars or motorcycles.

Today stores will be open from 9:00AM to 6:00PM this afternoon, and supermarkets will run from 9:00AM until the evening, with the exception of the central Athens market which will close its shutters at 06:00PM. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday all stores will be closed, and on Monday - 4 January they will continue their work according to the scheduled winter time hours. Bakeries are an exception because they will be open on Saturday - 2 January. On 5 January bakeries are open, but remember that the following day, because of Epiphany, they will be closed.

People working today will be able to use the public transportation because it will be working until late so that they can go home to their families without a problem. Last outdoor subway, running along the trail from neighborhood Kifisia to Piraeus port, will leave from Piraeus at 10:15PM in the evening and it will be at Omonia at 10:34PM. Back from Piraeus to Kifisia the last coaches will leave at 10:15PM and it will be at Omonia at around 10:47PM.

Buses and trolleys will stop working one hour earlier, but the subway will work until 11:00PM. The last coaches of the subway will run from Agios Dimitrios and Agios Andonios at 10:47PM, the last line of Subway - Egaleo Dukisis Plakendiyas will leave at 10:47PM and 10:37PM respectively, the latter coaches from Egaleo to the airport will leave at 09:27PM and back from the airport to the center it will leave at 10:05PM.

The last trams for this year will run from Voula to Peace and Friendship Stadium (PFS) at 10:03PM; from PFS to Voula at 10:31PM; from PFS to Syntagma at 10:17PM, from Voula to Syntagma at 09:21PM; from Syntagma to Voula at 09:40PM and from Syntagma to Agios Kosmas at 10:42PM.

On January 1, trams will run every 25 minutes coaches will stop every 12 minutes. For further information please call 185.
