The new strategy for crime control was introduced to the 42 mayors of the Attica’s municipalities and they strongly approved the institution “neighborhood police officer”.

During a conference in the Ministry of civil protection the mayors talked about the problems in their regions and they outlined their suggestions for crime control. The promise for effective cooperation by regions which they gave to each other together with Minister Hrisohoidis and deputy minister of healthcare Fofi Genimata will be observed by similar conferences in the future. With their mutual actions the two ministries are aiming at strengthening of the civil security measures in the neighborhoods and the prevention of the transformation of certain neighborhoods in ghettos. They will back up the actions of the drug control organization and they promised that all drug dependants will exercise their rights of treatment. For the implementation of this goal will assist the national number 197 for emergency help and crisis situations.  

Mayors and ministers discussed the matter of financing the centers for crime control. A special code has already been created by the ministry of finance, which will allow to have no delays in payments. Financing of the centers as up to now will be done together by local self-governments and by the state. The centers in question will focus their actions on students and sports fans.

One day before the conference the minister of education Anna Diamantopoulou send a letter criticizing the level of crimes and the immediate necessity of increasing the quality of life in the capital. Michalis Chrisohoidis did not wish to comment on her letter. His associates from the ministry stated that their situation “is answering in deeds, not in letters”.

Besides starting the activities of the neighborhood police officers, another procedure for placing identification codes on policemen’s uniforms is also in motion. The unique code will be the number under which the police officers are registered in the service. In order to be seen better the code of the officials from the special forces will be written on their helmets and will contain two digits – one will show the subdivision of the unit they belong to, and the other will be the number under which the policeman is registered.
