Alexis Tsipras and Evangelos Meimarakis had a surprise meeting at Heraklion airport, Crete, while the former Prime Minister was on his way back to Athens and the leader of New Democracy was going to Crete. According to Meimarakis’ associates, Tsipras looked very tired.

The initial inconvenience due to the sudden meeting transformed into smiles and the two men held the following dialogue:

  • Meimarakis: I was aware of you being in our region and thought it was my duty to welcome you and see you off.
  • Tsipras: Thank you. We were out of our minds in Anogia yesterday due to brandies. We drank one brandy on every corner.
  • Meimarakis: How are you, Alexis? Are you standing up?
  • Tsipras: I am standing up. You, however, have gained weight, Vangelis ...
  • Meimarakis: Look, when we have elections we gain weight from treats on Crete. But you are not lagging behind either, Alexis ...

After this dialogue the leaders of SYRIZA and New Democracy walked away from...the indiscreet ears and talked in private for a few minutes.

The meeting also involved politicians from New Democracy, who were accojmpanying Evangelos Meimarakis on his tour, including Olga Kefalogiannis, Dora Bakogiannis and Manolis Kefalogiannis.

Both parties are competing in the polls due to the breakup of SYRIZA and the inability of Alexis Tsipras to find a new political "fairy tale."

According to the poll conducted by the agency Pulse for Action 24, the margin between the two parties is only 1%.

Debate on 14 September

The debate between Tsipras and Meimarakis will be decisive for the course of the elections, but for the final election results too. The two leaders have agreed to hold it on 14 September.

The debate was requested by the leader of New Democracy, Tsipras agreed and now it is expected that it will determine the developments after the elections.
