Apachi helicopter of the Greek air forces crashed near the Pahis polygon in Megara while trying to land in an emergency. Having fallen to the ground, the machine burst into flames. Both pilots died despite the timely intervention of the fire forces.
Officially the cause of the tragic accident is not known, but it is believed that the crash was due to mechanical failure. The military prosecutor ordered an investigation, and Defence Minister Evangelos Venizelos announced three-day mourning in the Greek army.
The helicopter is AH-64 and is part of the last consignment of 12 state-of-art Apachi, which the Greek government bought in 2007. The machines waited three years before being formally received due to technical failures.
