Army missiles were found buried in a mountain close to Nea Vrasna during a special search by the special control and special department services of the Thessaloniki port.
There are eight 3,5in missiles, made in the US. Eleftherotypia newspaper writes that one hypothesis is that those missiles are part of the munitions stolen from a barrack near Larisa in 1989. According to sources from the Ministry of Defense, the missiles are most probably property of the above mentioned barrack, because until now there are no announcements about missing missiles from other storages.
The antiterrorist services do not believe the situation to be serious and do not connect it to an upcoming terrorist attack. The missiles were found wrapped and buried in a forest near Nea Vrasna, which is a hard to get area. They are barely rusty on top but the explosive is intact so it is believed they are ready to be used.
The responsibility to take the missiles of the scene was taken by the Regional Directorate of Central Macedonia. The director of the Thessaloniki port Konstantinos Tsakamis noted that help was asked from the special department of the port and he did not give any more details about the case. Before concluding he also said that the missiles have been transported to a lab in the criminal department if the Greek police, in order to be tested.
