The investigation of the case for the stolen corpse of former Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos is buried in darkness. Twenty days after unknown vandals dug out his grave and stole the corpse, Cypriot police simply rejected certain scenarios.
According to the Ta Nea newspaper the investigation was joined by U.S. Federal agencies. They sent an officer, who for two days has been collecting evidence from the cemetery where the late president was buried. Cypriot police have forwarded all information and evidence gathered in the case to the US agent, who works at the US Embassy in Athens.
At his return to Athens the FBI agent wrote a report to the headquarters in Washington. Based on the results of processing the data Washington will decide how they can help the Cypriot authorities to resolve the case. The Americans also have satellite pictures, which record each movement in the area.
Representative of the Cypriot police confirmed that FBI’s cooperation has been sought and added that Cypriot police is expecting their responses in order to decide on what kind of assistance they can rely. In the investigation is also aided by the British military services on the island, which provided a new software for loading and processing information. Cyprus has requested assistance from Greece and Israel as well, but both countries replied that they cannot do anything more than what has already been done by the Cypriot police.
When asked whether the rumors are correct about the corpse of former president being outside the territory of Cyprus, Cypriot police representative said that neither the FBI agent nor any other have expressed a similar assessment.
According to current information the investigating authorities are working on scenarios that the theft was committed by criminals of the underworld, who acted on the behalf of third parties. According to policeman M. Katsunotos investigation in recent days is running on more specific guidelines, because the police had received additional information which leads to a specific person.
