It is expected that the mother and grandmother of the baby found dead in the dumping ground in Lehaina in the Peloponnese on Monday will testify on Friday. A group of Roma who were searching for materials for recycling had found the dead body of the baby wrapped in a sheet and had informed the police immediately.
A little later the forensic doctor who conducted the autopsy said that the boy had been born alive five days earlier. In his opinion, the baby had been in good condition after his birth, his weight was 2.8 kg and his height 50 cm.
The doctor had found on the skull of the baby signs of injuries which are believed to have been caused during birth or during his stay in a dustbin.
A day later the police seized the two women who confessed that they had thrown the baby out. The investigation has revealed that the mother, aged 20, and the grandmother, aged 44, had decided to kill the baby immediately after his birth last Thursday, putting him in a dustbin near their house in the village of Neohori. The two women told the investigator that they had thrown the baby out because of the mother’s fear of the father and of the members of the Albanian community in the village to which they belong as she had given birth to an illegitimate child.
The mother, aged 20, is charged with infanticide and the grandmother with murder.
