Blinded by jealousy after his girlfriend's decision for a separation, a 20-year-old unemployed seaman-trainee at the school of the Merchant Navy beat the girl to death and threw her body in a field on the Thessaloniki-Katerini highway at the exit for Evzones.

Monica Konstantinidou’s traces were lost on 10 August and her parents notified the police about her disappearance from the very first day. They also named her former boyfriend, who despite their separation insisted on a reunion.

Reportedly, the young man was pathologically jealous and in order to dissuade her from leaving him and bring her back, he made an attempt to commit suicide by cutting his wrists.

The young woman, aged 25, worked part-time as a flight attendant for a Russian airline, and on the other days - at a tavern in Thessaloniki as a waitress. On the evening of 10 August, she returned from the tavern where she worked to her home in Monastiriou Street, giving a lift to a colleague of hers before that. She told her colleague that she was going to wake up early the next day because she was going to fly abroad and asked her mother to wake her up at 6 a.m.

Her boyfriend lived in the same area and according to the evidence they met before the girl got into the apartment. On the next day, her car was found parked as usual in the neighbourhood, but the girl herself did not appear neither at work, nor at home.

The police searched for the young man, but his parents tried to point them in the wrong direction, stating initially stated that he had disappeared, too. But then it became clear that he had gone to Turkey. On 15 August, the young man appeared before the police in Thessaloniki, admitted the crime and showed the place where the body which had begun to decompose was discovered yesterday morning.

The killer said they had argued and during the quarrel Monica had fallen and hit her head. Reportedly, however, the poor girl had been brutally beaten and died as a result of the blows. Today, the police are expecting the coroner's report on the exact circumstances under which the violent crime was committed.

Monica’s sister, Lida, said that Monica could not stand the jealousy of her boyfriend and wanted them to separate, and besides the young man often hit her.

The arrested 20-year-old killer appeared before the investigator this morning. By Monday, he should make a full confession. He is accused of premeditated murder for which he was arrested.
