The mixed jury in the court in Mytilene delivered their judgment on the case for the murder of 20 years old Australian Duson Zamit. The assassin of the young man was sentenced to 22 and a half years of prison. In the summer of 2008, Duson was beaten to death on the Mykonos Island.
The expectations were that the decision will come on Wednesday late in the evening, however the sitting was put off for Thursday. In the dock were standing four people – the leading suspect Marios – Sosipatros Andonopoulos and three other men accused in complicity in the crime. Two of them were sentenced to 8,3 and 7,5 years and for the third person who is a minor the court will deliver their judgment on the island of Syros.
At the sitting were present the parents of the diseased, his brothers and sisters, as well as Kostas Grimbilas, the man to whom was transplanted the heart of Duson.
On January 28th ends the 18 months term for which the 26 years old man was held in the prison in Korrydalos. Until recently the family of Duson was expressing their fears that the sitting might not be held by the expiration of this term and that Andonopoulos might be released from prison. 17 months after his arrest he admitted he is guilty for his actions and announced that he did not wish to cause the death of the boy.
At the sitting Alexis Kugias – lawyer of the Australians announced the position of the family that in the murder of their son took part all four of the suspects, not just one of them. The counsels for the defense emphasized on the weight of the responsibility which the decision will hold and mainly on the jury for the destiny of the life of the defendants.
Duson was murdered on July 28th, 2008 when a group of Australian youngsters were sitting at the “Tropicana” bar in Mykonos. Then the security guard of the bar Andonopoulos beat to death the youngster and lay on many hits with a truncheon on his head. As a result Duson was taken to the local health center and later transferred to a hospital in the capital. After registering the clinical death of the young man on August 2nd, 2008 his parents took the decision to shut down the life-supporting systems. Organs of Duson were donated to three more people.
Due to the engagement of the lawyer Kugias in the case for the murder of Duson Zamit yesterday the sitting of the court in Amfisa in the case of another murder – the one of Alexis Grigoropoulos was postponed for another date.
