New anarchist challenges

After yesterday's rush into the courtyard of parliament, today relatives of prisoners charged with terrorism who are on hunger strike unfurled a banner and shouted slogans in their support at the monument of the Unknown Soldier.

A little later, youths set on fire two waste bins in the area around the University of Economics in Athens and the circulation of vehicles on Patission street was interrupted for about half an hour. The police did not intervene but only watched and were in a state of readiness. Tensions gradually declined and nothing followed the arson.

Meanwhile, about 30 anarchists blocked the entrance to the administrative court in Patras. They also hung up a banner, shouting slogans in support of the prisoners, terrorists, who are on hunger strike and handed out leaflets to passers-by. There was no police intervention in this case either. The police only watched the anarchists from a distance.

Yesterday's rush of anarchists into the courtyard of parliament split the government. While president of the National Assembly Zoe Konstantopoulou said that nothing significant had happened and saw just protesters behind the raid, the government reacted in a different way. In particular, government spokesman Gabriel Sakellaridis said that such actions were not acceptable and determined the rush as a "provocative and incomprehensible act".

The decision of the anarchists to protest in the courtyard of parliament has provoked changes in the composition of the cabinet. The inability of the Ministries of Citizen Protection and Justice to coordinate their actions has led to their merger. By decision of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, preparation activities to transfer the Ministry of Citizen Protection to the Ministry Justice have been launched. Parallel to this, a decision has been taken to create a permanent special parliamentary commission to supervise the work of the police.

In addition, the bill to close the prisons with a high degree of security was submitted for consideration and voting earlier today. The government hopes that its adoption will end the occupation of various public buildings.

However, the occupation of Athens University continues.
