The new leadership of the opposition New Democracy party is now in place after its Eighth Congress ended as an indisputable leader remains Antonis Samaras. At the Congress were made administrative changes, while the big surprise was left on July 6, when Mr. Samaras will present his program for economic recovery. Party members voted also for political committee, but the most interesting is that were elected two deputy chairmen of the party just in case who are Dimitris Avramopoulos and Stavros Dimas. So far no trend is seen for the formation of a core of fans of Kostas Karamanlis, who was applauded loudly. The only thorn for Mr Samaras remain the fans of Dora Bakoyannis, who did not attend the Congress but have not yet left after her exiting from the right-wing party. It is unclear how many of them will leave New Democracy after Ms. Bakoyannis practically has already announced the formation of a new party in an interview she gave for the newspaper Real News.

At the congress it became clear that if New Democracy came to power it will eliminate the distraint for the police to enter into academic institutions and propose to vote against the new law for immigrants, which sets the requirements for obtaining Greek citizenship and was passed in March. As a main goal the party set the withdrawal of Greece from the signed Memorandum with the "triple" while it bound itself to present specific proposals for economic rehabilitation of the country until July 7. New Democracy tried to formulate its political ideology as "social liberalism" but Ms. Bakoyannis described Antonis Samaras’ ideology as "populist" and accused him of recklessness.

Ms. Bakoyannis commented that for the Congress of the party a lot of money have been spent without any result and accused the leader of New Democracy that he follows a policy of "ripe fruit" by investing in the government's failure and therefore the failure the country. Returning to the roots, which is usually used as a refuge by the parties who suffered defeat, will not bear fruit in the case of New Democracy, said Prof. Thanos Veremis - historian and professor of Political History of Modern Greece. "Conservative ideology in Greece tends to unite as it covers one big area that starts from one part of the left wing party and reaches all the way to the right party. The connecting element is maintaining a state – feedbox, one country to feed the citizens. The problem of today's right party is that nationalism, which once upon a time was its privilege is currently being spread as a concept both by the close to the center left party, and by the Communist Party" commented Mr. Veremis for Vima newspaper.

A majority of voters of New Democracy have turned to George Papandreou, because he supports the economic reforms which they believe are necessary and that once upon a time had promised to carry out also Costas Karamanlis, says Mr Veremis while genuine populists turn to the party LAOS of Mr. Karadzaferis. And probably the withdrawal of fans of New Democracy and their spread towards other political formations will deprive it from the probable prospective in the near future to take power, in short, is one of the conclusions of the analysis of Mr Veremis.
