New democracy’s extraordinary meeting on selecting a new party leader and government will take place on November 7, as announced from the blue party. Some of the members, however, are in favor of the direct promotion of a party chairman by all of its members. After meeting with Kostas Karamanlis yesterday, the former Minister of Defense Vangelis Meymarakis announced that the new leader will be appointed by the participants in the extraordinary congress, which will be selected by the party members.
Dimitris Avramopoulos, former Minister of Health, also considered a possible candidate of the leading position, declared to be for the selection of the leader by all members. “This issue has never been of higher popularity. The more people participate, the more democratic is the choice. Voting ordinances should be present all over Greece, in order for all New Democracy members to express their opinion,” he said.
According to information released in the media, Dora Backoyanni, currently a front-runner for head of the party, does not object that the candidate is selected by all party members. Additionally, she is planning to summon a new congress after the extraordinary one, and change the party statute, so it allows for all party members to participate in the selection of the leader. Former Minister of Culture, Andonis Samaras said he favors both way of leader selection. “Don’t doubt that soon New Democracy is going to show that it possesses power, ideas and personalities,” he said.
The extraordinary congress will be headed by the former Parliament chairman Dimitris Siufas.
