Late last night, New Democracy leader Evangelos Meimarakis started the first informal meetings with the staffs of other opposition parties. Shortly after the televised address during which Prime Minister Alekis Tsipras resigned Evangelos Meimarakis said that New Democracy would take the exploratory mandate to form a government and would use it to explore the possibilities for finding a solution within the framework of this parliament so that the elections be the last possible option or at least to obtain some idea of what could be expected after the elections.
The leader of the largest opposition party announced that during the three days of the exploratory mandate he would meet with Potami party leader Stavros Theodorakis, PASOK chairperson Fofi Genimata, general secretary of the Communist Party Dimitris Koutsoumbas and probably Panagiotis Lafazanis, leader of the Left Platform that has disaffiliated from SYRIZA.
Evangelos Meimarakis left open the issue of a possible meeting with the leader of Golden Dawn, although it remains to become clear whether Nikolaos Michaloliakos’ party will receive an exploratory mandate. In addition, the leader of New Democracy expressed his doubt about the usefulness of a meeting with leader of Independent Greeks Panos Kammenos, whose party might not enter the next parliament according to Meimarakis.
Evangelos Meimarakis accepted the resignation of the Prime Minister with severe personal criticism against Alexis Tsipras, accusing him of "laying down his arms" and "running away from the problems and the ghost of Lafazanis."
