Two new polls published in Sunday’s press are showing that SYRIZA is well ahead of New Democracy. Citizens appear seriously concerned regarding Greece’s possible exit from the Eurozone. The enthusiasm for a referendum isn't overwhelming, either.
According to the Kapa Research survey published in To Vima, SYRIZA sustains 36.9% of voters' preferences. New Democracy only gets 21.7%. An ALCO poll in Proto Thema clocks up a slightly smaller margin between the two: 35.9 % for the ruling party and 21.8% for New Democracy.
The rest of the parties have received little support. In both studies Potami came third with 7.3% and 5.1%, respectively. According to Kappa Research, the fourth political force is Golden Dawn (5.7%), but the ALCO poll gives better chances to the Communist Party (5.1%).
Euro, Grexit and referendum
Both polls show great concern among citizens over the possible exit of Greece from the eurozone. According to Kappa Research, 68.8% of respondents believe that the peril of Grexit is real, and 72.9% want the country to remain in the eurozone. According to ALCO, 48% of citizens are worried about a probable Grexit, against 45% of unconcerned.
71.9% of Kappa respondents believe an agreement with creditors is the best outcome for the country. According to ALCO, asked whether Europe would accept Greek proposals, 50% responded that the government should make a compromise while 36% insisted on a breakup.
Relatively little support was given for a referendum or early elections. 32.7% in the Kappa poll wanted a referendum, while 18.7% opted for new elections. In the ALCO study, 27% of respondents liked the idea of a referendum, and 15% were for elections.
