High temperatures this weekend were caused a new wave of fires to flood Greece. Strong fires broke out in the regions around Lamia, Igoumenitsa and Evia, where the fire departments remain at the scene.

The fire in the forest area of the village Grameni around Lamia is currently under control. The fire broke out on Saturday afternoon in the area Makrokomi by burning weeds and dry grasses. Because of the strong wind in the area the flames quickly spread and the fire disaster assumed dangerous proportions . The fire passed through the village of Grameni, 20 km west of Lamia. One of the generated three outbreaks was in a valley, making it particularly difficult for extinction. Due to the strong winds in the area there was a risk for the flames to spread out to the neighboring village Trilof. Luckily it did not happen. Although the flames could not reach the buildings in the village of Grameni, its inhabitants left their houses to fight them using all means at hand. There are no victims of the disaster. In the extinction of the fire took part 10 firefighters, four tanks, two land department 2 aircrafts and 1 helicopter.

Under partial control is also the fire in the area of Filiaton, Igoumenitsa. The fire broke out on Saturday afternoon in the forest area with a height of 1500 meters. The flames covered bushes and dry grasses. As the fire department noted the fire was a kilometer away of a mined area of the army. Fortunately the wind was blowing in the opposite direction and it didn’t get to a tragedy. In the extinction of fires took part 11 firefighters, four tanks, 30 people from the land department and a helicopter. The fire departments are still in the area.

Partly under control is also the fire in Ritsona, Evia. The area has low vegetation, weeds and reeds were burning.

Those guilty of the fires which broke out in the area of Kakoperatos on the island of Samos were released free. The beekeepers family and a friend of theirs who accidentally set on fire 10,000 acres of farming land paid a monetary bail and will now appear twice a month in the district police station for review. The farmers and breeders on the island affected will be compensated, said the Deputy Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and networks of Greece Nikos Sifounakis during his two-days visit on the island.
