live Night of fires in Athens

The extinguishment of the huge fire which had started in the northern suburb of Varibombi in Athens late last night continued all through the night. Ten firefighting aircrafts, one “Superpuma” helicopter, 61 fire engines, dozens of firefighters and infantry units were involved in the fight with the blaze as announced by the head of the Greek fire department Sotiris Georgakopoulous. According to him, the flames were under control this morning and the physical damage to houses and public buildings was limited.

    The fire had started in a pine forest at 10:48 pm on Monday, spreading quickly due to the strong winds. The fight with the blaze lasted all night, involving the aviation at dawn. Currently, the fire is confined to the area between the suburbs of Varibombi and Thrakomakedones and it is moving eastward. The blaze has damaged dozens of houses and has also affected the Olympic Village and a military firing range, located in the area.


    The residents of two streets in the area had to be evacuated. Currently thick smoke is covering the area of ​​Mount Parnitha near the suburb of Metamorfosi.
