The investigators and prosecutors in the case of Golden Dawn ordered party leader Nikos Michaloliakos to remain in custody pending trial on charges of heading a criminal organization. The proceedings related to his testimony began at 7:30 pm on Wednesday and ended at 01:30 am on Thursday.
According to sources, Michaloliakos said he was a victim of political persecution, condemned the murder of rap singer Pavlos Fyssas and violence in general, and stated that he was neither racist nor Nazi. Moreover, he tried to convince the investigators that Golden Dawn was engaged only in parliamentary activity and that he did not know whether the behaviour of its members was criminal.
The same is the decision concerning the head of the local branch of Golden Dawn in the suburb of Nikea in Piraeus, George Patelis, and one of the policemen, who had been arrested for their collaboration with the extremists. Early in the morning they were taken back to the police headquarters in Attica where they will stay until it is decided to which prisons they will be sent.
Deputy Christos Pappas who, according to the indictment is the vice-chairman of the criminal organization, will testify today.
At the same time, the police arrested the former director of the police station in the district of Agios Panteleimonas in central Athens and a resident of the neighbourhood named Themis Skordeli, as they had found at the house of the policeman a handwritten note signed with her name. The police say Themis Skordeli is an active member of Golden Dawn and a defendant in a case of an attack on immigrants.
While searching her house the police had found and confiscated a large number of leaflets of Golden Dawn, 18 small bombs, 2 sheets of papers containing the addresses, names and nationalities of immigrants, a saving-bank book with a significant amount, notes on the activities of Golden Dawn, and two bags full of replicas of famous brands and counterfeit music CDs and DVDs.
